I have the honour to refer to Mr. N.L.

5 Smith's air mail despatch No. 570 of the 9th

September, 1937, regarding accommodation of British

refugees from Shanghai and to transmit for your

information copy of a report by the Chairman of the

Shanghai Refugees Committee on the expenditure to

date and the present running cost of maintaining

the refugees for whom the Committee is still

responsible.

It has been agreed with the local Military

Authorities that certain expenses in connection with

assistance given by these Authorities to the

Shanghai Refugee Committee shall be included in the

accounts to be rendered by the Hong Kong Government

and will be refunded by this Government to the

Military Authorities when payment has been received

from the responsible department of His Majesty's

Government. The exact amount of these expenses is

not yet known but it is not expected that it will

exceed a few hundred dollars.
